Still dancing around in my mind are the delightful songs of “My Fair lady” which I watched a couple of weeks ago in the Alban Arena. Such a superb production! Particularly apt is the “ woooouldn’t it be loverly” song. Now some of us our affluent St.Albans have plenty, but most of us wish for more than we’ve got. Have you ever entered one of those”thousand pound and holiday of a life-time” draws that the tele tempts us with?” Apparently winning can actually cause a lot of family strife.
Every Monday I sit and talk with guests in a local food bank . There’s those who have no job due to injury at work, but no compensation; or have their children removed due to drugs or drink problems in the home ,or just find universal credit does not meet all their basic needs.
I love this season of Christmas but I am sometimes quite shocked that the celebration of the birth of baby born to a refugee couple in cold and dirty circumstances, is promoted by ads for extravagant indulgence .
The talk in my church last Sunday was on being a Christian in a greedy world. The Bible has many quotable phrases, e.g. “The Love of money is root of all evil” for one, and “Godliness with contentment is great gain.” The speaker in our church summed things up with a few directives: 1) Stop moaning; 2) Stop blaming others. 3) Enjoy life. 4) Choose to be generous, and 5) Develop an attitude of gratitude.
The grass always looks greener the other side of the fence, but is it ?
