This week I pulled up a what I thought was a weed in the garden, only to find that the roots had tiny new potatoes attached… I quickly reburied it, but doubt that particular plant will now produce a full crop. Just one of the perils of taking over a garden from someone else, you simply don’t know what lies beneath. There have been some beautiful surprises – a glorious peony – but also hidden bulbs, which have been swiftly returned to the soil.
It caused me to reflect, that people are much in the same. In our relationships with others, we cannot fully understand the impact of the past and the fruit – or otherwise – that may have resulted. We encounter people in different seasons of their life and it takes time to appreciate the bigger picture. What appears at first to be a flaw, could be something quite different. Give a person sufficient love and appreciation, and they can bear all kinds of fruit. In the right season, you may equally be just the person to help prune away the dead wood of the past.
There is so much emphasis now on being in a hurry, feeling stressed, too much to do. Does this cause us to look too fast at people and make rash judgements? Maybe we need to slow down, re-evaluate the people in our lives. Look for the good in others and don’t be too hasty in pulling up the weeds, damaging others or dispensing with valuable relationships.
