St Albans Bowling Club have held their last competition of the season.
It was an Australian Pairs competition which is the only one where the participants can choose their own partner.
There were 12 pairs, divided into two sections and each team played every other in their section.
The finalists were the brothers Peter and Andy Kay, and husband and wife team Pauline and John Gardiner. The final was very closely contested with the Gardiners the eventual winners by only one shot.
The club intended to hold a closing day tournament on Sunday with 48 players taking part but the rain scuppered this prospect.
The committee held a quiz for members after which the presentation of trophies took place.
A special award for the ‘clubman of the year’ was awarded by the men’s captain Ted Salvidge to John Gardiner.
He is a loyal and hard-working member of the club and in addition to being a Green Ranger, assists throughout the winter months with any maintenance work required.
The day was rounded off with a meal prepared by Liz Kay.
The club intends to run two more ‘Bowls 4 Free’ courses next season during April and May.
Participants will receive four free coaching sessions with Diana Tribe, a county qualified coach.
Places are limited and are allocated on a first come basis.
Four spots have already been reserved so contact the organiser Tricia Gascoine on 01727 860298 if you are interested in taking part.
