London Colney secured second place after a comprehensive 3-0 win over Wembley on Saturday which extended their unbeaten run to 24 matches in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division.
AFC Dunstable’s 2-0 loss to Hadley meant the Blueboys finished runners up and they are rounding off their season in some style.
Colney hit the ground running on Saturday, and just 50 seconds in, a precise ball over the top from Bobby Armstrong was taken down well by James Ewington, who drilled the ball past Bart Fogler in the Wembley goal.
Barely minutes later, the away side were appealing for a penalty after Tom Smith went over in the box, claiming that he had been pushed, but the referee waved play on.
And the Blueboys’ onslaught continued throughout the first half, with Wembley struggling to keep hold of the ball, hitting numerous long balls to little avail.
Sam Doolan, Spencer Clarke-Mardel and Greg Shaw each had chances to extend the away side’s lead, but Fogler’s backline stood firm.
That was until the 27th minute, when Ewington capitalised upon some sloppy defensive play, pouncing upon a poor back pass before rounding the keeper and slotting home from an acute angle.
From then on, Wembley’s defensive line never looked like recovering, and it wasn’t long before they conceded a third.
Rhys Lawrence and Danny Fitzgerald played a clever one-two before Fitzgerald, spotting Fogler off his line, looped the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net, making the contest effectively over after just 31 minutes.
Wembley looked to frustrate the away side in the second half, as they attempted to break down play and keep the score down to just three.
But their day then got a whole lot worse, as Attila Fekete was given his marching orders for two yellow cards.
