Tributes have been paid to a Maths student enrolled at Oxford University who died at his Harpenden home.
An inquest has been opened after Matthew Beggs, 21, known to friends as Matt, died in Otterton Close on September 23.
The initial cause of death was suspension and police are not treating it as suspicious.
The former Roundwood Park student was a keen member of Harpenden Hockey Club where he played as a goalkeeper.
A message on the club’s website said: “The club are extremely sad to announce the tragic death of Matt.
“Matt, who was an outstanding goalkeeper, played for our club at every level and for Oxford University.”
“Our thoughts go out to his father Ian and brother Alex, who also play for the club, and to all his family and many friends.”
Tributes have also been paid to the young man on social networking sites.
One comment on Twitter said: “Very sad week for the GK community, with the passing of Oxford Uni GK Matt Beggs. Good man gone far too young. Prayers go out to his family.”
A funeral was held for Matt at West Herts Crematorium in Garston on Monday.
