A mother from St Albans has come one step closer to having parking restrictions placed near her children’s school.

Speaking to the Review in July, Liz McCann described the parking situation outside Wheatfields School as "an accident waiting to happen".

The gates to both the primary and junior schools are in Downes Road, a small cul-de-sac with about eight residential properties.

Ms McCann was concerned as the narrowness of the road means that cars can only exit by doing a three point turn and mounting the pavements, blocking the footpaths.

St Albans District Council has now announced that it aims to introduce parking restrictions on the road before the end of the year.

Ms McCann, of Sandridge Road, said: "I’m delighted. Everyone is really pleased.

"They are finally going to do something before someone is hurt.

"We just want it to be done.

"If it hurts someone in their pocket they won’t do it again - that is where it hurts most."

The council’s proposals now need to get the go ahead from Hertfordshire Highways and the emergency services.

If the restrictions go ahead only residents will be allowed to park in the road during term times.

Mike Lovelady, head of legal, democratic and regulatory services at the council, said: "We are proposing to introduce parking restrictions in Downes Road following feedback from residents and discussion with local councillors.

"The measures were proposed following concerns raised by Wheatfields School and parents."
