An Olympic gold medallist visited St Albans to officially open a new £6.6m sports centre.
Duncan Goodhew, who won a gold swimming medal at the 1980 games in Moscow, was the special guest at St Albans School yesterday.
The former Olympian was joined by the mayor of St Albans, the high sheriff of Hertfordshire and the vice chancellor of Hertfordshire University to open the school’s new facility.
The new development was designed by David Morgan, a former pupil.
It includes a six-lane pool, fitness suite, sports hall, badminton courts and a dance studio.
Andrew Grant, headteacher at the school, said: "This wonderful new facility will not only hugely enhance and enrich the opportunities for sport and physical fitness of our own students, but the pool is already in use by local clubs and children from local primary schools.
"There has been much speculation as to how the legacy of London 2012 is to be secured and I am confident that with this magnificent new building we can make our own small contribution towards that."
