Traffic heading towards motorway junctions in St Albans has been brought to a standstill following a crash and a broken down vehicle on the M1.
Lanes had to be closed on the motorway near Junction 4 in Edgware after a vehicle broke down this morning. This aggravated existing delays caused by overnight road works on the M1 overrunning.
Although the lanes have now been reopened the incident has caused queuing and delays as far back as Bricket Wood.
The situation has been further exacerbated by a multi-vehicle crash on the M1 north of the city between Junctions 10 and 11.
Two northbound lanes have been closed near Luton leaving an average speed of 10mph on that stretch of the motorway.
