A Harpenden schoolgirl has become a ‘local celebrity’ overnight after being selected to play a leading role in a Dick Whittington Christmas pantomime.

Jessica Pegram, 17, is over the moon to have been selected to play the leading role of Alice Alice Fitzwarren in the pantomime, alongside CBeebies star Cerrie Burnell and Blue Peter star, Peter Purves.

Jessica, of West Common, who studies A-Levels at Roundwood Park School sixth form, has been involved in musical theatre for seven years and attends the Stage Coach in Harpenden.

She has already appeared in a number of productions, including ‘West Side Story’ at the Harpenden Public Halls.

She said: “I knew the show was professional and didn’t think I would have a chance but I thought I would just go for it anyway.

“When I was picked for the role, I was so shocked.

“I am really pleased and so excited for it all to begin.

“So far we have only had one rehearsal and I really enjoyed it.

“I have seen Kerry and Peter on television and it is so strange to sit next to them with your lines.

“They have been very lovely, warm and friendly.

“After a while you forget they are in fact celebrities.”

The budding performer hopes to go to drama school or study a musical theatre course in university, next year when she has completed her drama, music and english A- Levels.

Jessica added: “My friends and family have been really supportive and my friends keep coming up to me and telling me they have seen me on posters around Harpenden.

“It is like I have become a local celebrity.

“I am quite nervous about the shows, just because i know this is the longest show i have ever done.

“However I am so delighted and it is going to be a great experience.

The pantomime will take place at Harpenden Public Halls from December 15 to 22.
