The exact route that the Olympic Torch will take when it passes through St Albans in the lead up to this summer’s games was announced this morning.

When it arrives in the city on July 8, the iconic torch will make its way along Hatfield Road, crossing St Peters Street, Catherine Street, Folly Lane and turning on to Verulam Road.

Some 8,000 people from across the UK have been selected to carry the flame during its 70-day journey, including at least two St Albans residents.

Once it has passed through St Albans the torch will travel through Hemel Hempstead.

The city is one of ten areas in the county that will form the route through Hertfordshire.

Derrick Ashley, chair of the Hertfordshire is Ready for Winners Partnership, said: "The London 2012 Olympic Games brings a wealth of excitement to the county and the torch relay provides opportunities for communities to get together and celebrate not only the Games, but to show support for the achievements of local people chosen to run with the Olympic flame.

"We are fortunate that the torch is visiting ten towns in the county, giving plenty of cause for celebration. All Hertfordshire residents will be within a few miles of the flame at some point during the weekend celebrations."
