“Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council’s recycling roadshow in Welwyn Garden City on Saturday 29 October was a great opportunity for residents to get answers to questions about the service in Welwyn Hatfield. Everyone who attended was very interested in how the service worked and what happened to their recycling once it is collected. It was a great opportunity to interact with users of the service and show them how it works from start to finish. There were lots of questions asked with a high level of genuine interest.
“People had the chance to see how a freighter works, as well as investigate samples of recycled materials once they’ve been processed. This included plastic, cans and organic waste.
“The roadshow also provided an opportunity to show how contaminated organic waste is on the rise in Hertfordshire. Samples of “clean” mulch were on display, as well as some of the items that had been put into brown bins, including pieces of metal and, even, a mobile telephone! These were on display to show how poor levels of recycling can impact the end product, which should create organic compost! Brown bins are for organic waste, blue lidded bins accept plastic, glass, cans and paper.
“Serco, the council’s streetscene partners, and Pearce’s, the recycling plant managers, were in attendance alongside representatives from the council.”
