THE son-in-law of one of Bob Wilson, one of Welwyn Hatfield's most well known celebrities, has died, poisoned by a sea urchin.

Mitchell Carey, 43, who lost his first wife Anna to cancer in 1998, died in Stevenage's Lister Hospital on August 18.

Mr Wilson, a former Arsenal and Scotland goalkeeper who lived in Brookmans Park for many years but has now moved to Dorset, is reported to be devastated .

Mr Carey was on holiday in Greece with his second wife Deborah Smith when he trod on a sea urchin, and developed stomach pains and a swollen foot after his return.

The Willow Foundation charity, which organises many local fundraising events to provide "special days" for seriously ill young adults, was founded by Mr wilson in memory of his daughter, after her death from cancer.

A spokeswoman for the Willow Foundation, which is based in Hatfield, said neither the charity nor Mr Wilson would comment publicly on Mr Carey's death.

According to national press reports, Mr Carey's condition had earlier been dismissed by hospital doctors as food poisoning.

The trust which manages the Lister and Welwyn Garden City's QEII says his death is under investigation but it appears everything possible was done to save his life.

An inquest is likely to be formally opened and adjourned on Wednesday.
