A STUDENT from Harpenden has been nominated for an award recognising his enthusiasm and dedication at school.
Lee Goldfarb, who is currently studying four A-levels at Sir John Lawes School, was put forward for a Young People of the Year (YOPEY) award by two of his teachers – Helen Gosnall and Kenny Alexander.
The YOPEY scheme rewards youngsters who give to others and celebrate the achievement of the flourishing generation was set up by youth campaigner Tony Gearing.
Earlier this year the Review launched its KiDs campaign in a bid to put a stop to the bad press they suffer.
Tony, a former national newspaper journalist, who backed our campaign, said he said up his competition to give the youngsters a fairer image.
Speaking about his nomination 16-year-old Lee said: “I just enjoy trying to make a difference. Most people complain about things but don't really do anything to bring about change.”
It is not always plain sailing as Lee admits there are times when things do not work out.
Lee, of Noke Shot, Harpenden, added: “We really tried hard to bring cheaper travel fares into effect for young people in the area but nothing happened it was very demoralising.”
Since joining the sixth form at the Harpenden school, Lee has become involved in Young Enterprise where he is a member of a company called Spiral Scope which is selling wrapped chocolate for Christmas and plans to support charity. He is also a member of the school's debating club.
Geography teacher Mr Gosnall said: “Lee is a founding member of the eco-schools group who work on a variety of initiatives aimed at making the school more sustainable, this includes measures to improve recycling and reduce energy use.”
Beyond the school gates Lee is now setting his sights on the UK Youth Parliament and is hoping to get elected next February as a Member of Youth Parliament for Hertfordshire.
Tony said: “Lee is a great example of a young person who is pro-actively engaging in worthwhile causes both at school and in the wider community.”
