FIFTY white doves were released into the sky above Verulamium Park this morning to mark the beginning of Domestic Violence Awareness Week (Monday, November 16).
Guests including Lady Verulam and the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire were among those who gathered at the St Albans park to watch the birds, which symbolise hope and peace, flutter into the air.
The event was also held to encourage the public to learn more about the issue.
Keith Emsall, executive member for community safety and culture at the county council, said: “The likelihood is that we all know at least one person who is a victim of domestic violence.
“We don't want it swept under the carpet. We want to encourage neighbours, work colleagues, friends or victims themselves to report domestic violence and seek support."
