Harpenden: Classics on The Common celebrates 30 years

Taking place on July 24, it was a day for car enthusiasts from across the district to marvel at an impressive array of retro vehicles.

On a thankfully warm day, around 10,000 people packed on to Harpenden Common for what is the biggest event on the club's calendar.

John Murray, the chairman of the trustees of the Rotary in Harpenden, said: "We were delighted to have organised what was the 30th edition of Classics on The Common, which has become a firm fixture in the Harpenden calendar for all the community to enjoy. 

"Nine-hundred classic cars and motorbikes were on display and The Common was packed with visitors eager to see them as well as a range of other attractions.

 "A big thank you to all those who came out to see the spectacle and donated so generously to our charities."

Since the club took over management of the event in 2009, more than £380,000 has been raised for charity, taking in £34,000 at last year's event.

This year's event supported Youth Talk, Hope & Homes For Children and the Hertfordshire branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

While figures for this year are not available yet, the day appears to have been another well-attended success with all the tickets snapped up well in advance of the big day.

The oldest car spotlighted was a 1913 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, with a 1916 Harley Davidson F being the oldest bike.

There was also a 40ft motorcycle simulator and 15 autojumble stalls.

Hot food stalls and ice cream vans kept people fed throughout the day.
