A charge of £6 per adult, £3 per child and £4 for concessions has now been proposed for residents by St Albans City and District Council.

St Albans and district residents had previously benefitted from free entry to the museum.

Under the proposals, charges for non-residents would rise  to £8 per adult, £4 per child and £5 for concessions.

The proposals form part of St Albans City and District Council's new budget, which will be considered on February 22.

A budget gap of £2.3 million has been announced, and proposals have been made to save money.

Chris Traill, strategic director for community and place delivery at St Albans City and District Council, said: "Like other councils, our budget is under great pressure and many savings and income proposals are being considered including for museum entrance at Verulamium.

"Museums are a discretionary service that we provide, rather than compulsory, so we do need to consider charging.

"Current proposals include the introduction of a charge for residents to visit Verulamium Museum.

"Proposed charges are £3 for children, £4 for concessions, £6 for adults, and £15 for a family ticket.

"Entrance charges for non-residents, who already pay, would rise to £4 for children, £5 for concessions, £8 for adults, and £18 for a family ticket.

"Residents and those living outside the District will continue to get free entry if they are a member of the ‘Friends of the Museum’ scheme.

"Friends membership starts at £10 for Young Friends and £38 for adults.

"Concessions, joint, and family memberships are also available and more details can be found on the museums’ website.

"Amongst other benefits, Friends of the Museum members receive free admission to Verulamium Museum and the Clock Tower, free admission to special exhibitions, priority booking for events and activities, discounts, updates, and invitations to exclusive Friends only events.

"Budget proposals will be considered by councillors at the council meeting on 22 February when they meet to set the budget."
