Three veterans have laid wreaths during a Remembrance service at a Harpenden Care home.

The event took place on Armistice Day (Friday, November 11) at Willow Court care home, on Aldwickbury Crescent.

Norman Wearne (100), Brian Saffery (88) and Mr. C (104) all took part in the ceremony, having served in the Second World War.

The three care home residents laid the wreaths following a period of silence, and the playing of the Last Post.

Brian then read a poem that he had written as a tribute to his uncle, who had died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, during the First World War.

Members of the Royal British Legion, family members and friends witnessed the event.

Willow Court manager Sarah Adlam: "Today’s event was extremely poignant for our residents, and was an opportunity for them to reflect on their own personal experiences and give thanks to all those who made sacrifices for their country.

"We would like to extend our thanks to the Royal British Legion for their support in this event.

"The journey to the local war memorial is not an easy one for some, so being able to mark this day in the way that we did was important to our veterans, our residents and to us.”
