MY father-in-law built this pub, brick by brick, back in the 60s.

He has been back several times recently to enjoy the new look - the smart decor, the open fires and, it must be said, the pretty good food.

I enjoyed it too - I think.

There was a good atmosphere, friendly, and a good cross section of young and old.

The collection of snugs makes it a good place to take someone you would rather not be seen with - if you know what I mean.

The mix of seating is reminiscent of an up-market second hand furniture shop (if there is such a thing). The sink-in sofas and stiff back chairs make it something of a lottery as to whether your session will be a comfortable one. Give me a stiff one any day of the week.

Prices are pretty good - around £2.20 for a pint of Grolcsh and there's a goodish variety of draughts. A good choice of wine too, everything from Blossom Hill and its insipid ilk to a dedent rioja for those who care what's in the bottle rather than what's on the label.

There's not a lot of parking, but being in the middle of a posh-ish housing estate, I don't suppose that matters.

One negative the loos are upstairs. I don't like pubs where you have to go upstairs, downstairs or outside to discharge. It interferes with good drinking time.
