Up to 38,000 homes across Hertfordshire do not have a working smoking alarm.
To encourage people to install alarms, Hertfordshire County Council has produced a new video on how and where to install one in your home.
Roy Wilsher, director of community protection and chief fire officer at Hertfordshire County Council, said: "The best way you can protect yourself and your home from fire is by having a working smoke alarm, properly installed in the right location, on every level of your house.
"We’ve got guidance on the best smoke alarms to buy and how to install them on our website but we can also offer advice with our free home fire safety visits and supply fire alarms for the hard of hearing where appropriate."
