More than 100 Ford workers could lose their jobs if they do not move to the north of England, it has emerged
Ford Credit, who has an office in Everald Close, St Albans, announced plans to close its St Albans office and move the staff to an office in Manchester.
If workers choose not to move to Manchester, the company has insisted they will “seek to maximise redeployment opportunities in its offices in Warley, Essex” and a "voluntary seperation programme will also be available".
Ford Credit helps customers to pay for new vehicles and stock dealerships.
Staff were told about the plans late last week and under current proposals, the St Albans office could be closed later this year or early next year.
Christopher Makin, director of communications, at Ford Credit Europe said: “Subject to this consultation process, the Company proposes to offer all 120 employees within its Retail operation the opportunity to relocate to Manchester, with their existing jobs.
“For employees who do not wish to take up relocation, the Company will seek to maximise redeployment opportunities in its offices in Warley, Essex, and a voluntary separation programme will also be available.
“Ford Credit recognises the high standards of dealer and customer service that have been provided by the team at St Albans and will ensure that service levels remain at the highest standard – wherever the work is performed and during the relocation process.
“The Company’s proposal would lead to the phased closure of its St Albans site from the end of Q4 2015 through Q1 2016.”
Mr Makin said Ford Credit has now launched a consultation to work the affected staff.
He added: “The Company is committed to working constructively with employees and to ensure they are treated fairly and sensitively as it works through the impacts of this proposed organisational change.”
