A taxi driver was assaulted in an "unprovoked attack" in St Albans.

The incident happened near the war memorial in St Peters Street between 6.50pm and 7pm on Friday, March 27.

The driver of the white and yellow taxi was transporting six passengers – five men and one woman – to The Goat pub in Sopwell Lane when one of the men asked him to pull over.

The driver was then assaulted by three of the men, resulting in bleeding and swelling to his face.

The three men and the woman then left in the direction of Harpenden Road, while the driver took the other two men to the taxi rank where they got out of the vehicle.

The three suspects are all described as being white and aged between 18 and 20. The men were wearing black suits and white shirts.

PC Karen Goodwin, who is investigating, said: “This was an unprovoked attack which has left the victim extremely shaken and I am keen to trace the three men responsible for the assault as soon as possible.

“I would urge anyone who was in the area at the time and believes they may have seen either the incident or this group of people to contact me as soon as possible.

"I would also like to hear from anyone who may have any other information about what happened.”
