Police are investigating after thieves broke into 17 stalls at the Christmas Market in St Albans on Friday night.
Hertfordshire Constabulary said cash was stolen from the German-style market between 4.30am and 5am.
The market last year attracted 45,000 visitors in its inaugural year and this year has 100 stalls with festive items, food and gifts.
Richard Shwe, head of community services at St Albans District Council said: “Sadly, thieves targeted the Christmas Market and broke into a number of chalets. Four chalets were particularly affected.
“The police are investigating and the council has taken the matter up with the company contracted to manage security and patrol the site.
“We are working to support the traders who have lost stock. Clearly this is a blow for them and for us.
“In the meantime the security company has increased the number of guards and we are increasing CCTV coverage in the area.
“Despite the setback, the market opened as planned the following day and has been buzzing all weekend with an estimated 19,000 visitors since Friday. I’d like to invite people to come on down and show your support to the traders.”
