Sharing 108 years with the Harpenden Committee of Children’s Society The Harpenden branch of what was then the Church of England Children’s Society held its first meeting in Harpenden over 40 years ago and has remained an active and vibrant Committee ever since. Members arrange events to raise funds to support the Children’s Society’s work to help children of all faiths and none, including those at risk on the streets, disabled children, young refugees or those within the youth justice system.
On July 10th the Committee held an afternoon tea to celebrate the service of three of its longest serving members. Margaret Gander joined in 1978 and held the positions of Treasurer, Vice Treasurer and Chair during her long association with the Committee. Nona Moss joined in 1985, but had also collected boxes for the Society for the 10 years prior to this. Rosemary Hall joined in 1981. Between them they have accumulated 108 years of service.
Current Chair, Gill Holland, said “When Rosemary decided to retire we obviously wanted to thank her and celebrate her long service. Knowing Nona and Margaret had a similar long career, we reviewed and records and found they had exceeded a century of support between them and felt this was definitely a milestone to celebrate.”
The three enthusiastic supporters were treated to a delicious tea and each presented with a certificate of recognition from the Children’s Society, together with a simple engraved vase and flowers. Memories from the archive books were enjoyed. As Nona said “We are united in friendship because of a common and simple aim - to help children.”
The Harpenden Committee arranges concerts, jumble sales and various events throughout the year. The next event will be a quiz on November 8th in St Nicholas Church Hall and tickets will be available in September.
