At Synagogue this week we read about the cycle of the calendar and the specific sacrifices that are brought for each religious holiday.  I am reminded of the excitement I get when looking forward to the next holiday and all the preparation that comes with it.

As I am now getting to the final, frantic, preparations for a big day (our first child) to arrive in the near future, I am almost giddy with excitement and a bit anxious about the changes that will inevitably occur.  My time with my wife will not be exclusively ours for years to come, sleep will be a distant memory and tired will take on a whole new meaning.  Perhaps that is why pregnancy takes about nine months, to allow us to grow accustomed to the idea that life is going to irrevocably change. Yet, it is a transition that I welcome with open arms.

Change is something that we as humans typically either avoid, or do not accept with ease.  It pushes us out of our comfort zone, and forces us to alter our routines.  We are creatures of habit, yet change is essential to our existence.  Standing still is simply not an option.  Whether we seek them out or not, opportunities to grow and change are inevitable.  We can either choose to accept them or become victimised by them.  Change is as natural as the sun rising in the East; attempting to arrest the flow of change is unnatural and ultimately futile, for we would be negating an essential element of who we are.

I pray that we have the courage and strength to welcome that change in our lives, as we add them to the sum total of our existence, and become better for it.
