Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre in St Albans has won a national award for its energy-efficient and innovative design.
The building received a Gold Award in the category for Community Construction Project at the Green Apple Awards 2014 awards. The awards are designed to raise perception of what is possible in terms of sustainable construction in the built environment and architectural heritage sector.
Councillor Annie Brewster, portfolio holder for sports, leisure and heritage at the council, said: “It is brilliant for St Albans to be recognised nationally. There are so many clever features and themes that contribute to the sustainability and low maintenance of the building while complementing the history of the site.
" In particular, the Ancaster limestone, used in the main façade of St Albans Abbey, fronts the gym and spa curved façade.
"It also reflects the earthy colours of the park. The low flint walls around the building provide seating areas and reflect our Roman wall remains. The external vibrant coloured glass panels at the entrance refer to the stained glass of the Abbey towering above the entire site.
“The Council was the only local authority in our category and it was quite an achievement by the entire team to come out on top of the many private sector projects.”
