HATFIELD AGAINST INCINERATION
UPDATE ON THE CAMPAIGN
AGAINST AN INCINERATOR AT NEW BARNFIELD
The Public Inquiry into the Planning Application by Veolia to build at 380,000 tonnes per year incinerator at New Barnfield ended on October 25th. The parties who opposed the incinerator now await the Report of Inspector Richards and the decision of the Secretary of State. This is likely to be known next Spring.
In addition to the Public Inquiry, there has been an Examination, by Inspector Andrews, of the Herts County Council Waste Sites Allocations plan. The Waste Sites Allocations plan is about all the waste sites proposed for the whole county, including New Barnfield. The session on Nov 5th was about the New Barnfield site, and the session on Nov 6th was about modifications that Herts County Council proposes to make to their Waste Sites Allocations plan in the light of issues raised at the Examination.
Inspector Andrews will now consider all the material about Waste Sites for Herts, and a list of proposed main modifications to the Herts Waste Sites Plan will be published by December 16th. The public – individuals and organisations – will then be invited to respond to a Consultation on those modifications between January 6th and February 14th 2014.
Cathy Roe, Secretary of Hatfield Against Incineration, said, “When we see the final proposed modifications to the Waste Sites Allocations plan, HAI will, if necessary, suggest ways in which people can respond. So the campaign is not yet quite complete, and is likely to continue in January 2014.”
Paul Zukowskyj, Secretary of New Barnfield Action Fund, said, “Two independent inspectors are now considering the issues that have been put to them, and we are hopeful that eventually we will have a positive result for New Barnfield.”
