The history of the former Radlett Aerodrome will be explored in a London Colney community centre next month.
The site near Park Street, is currently in the press regarding developer plans to build a rail freight depot on the site, which is green belt land.
However Chris Scivyer, Chairman of the Handley Page Association said he was keen to inform people of the site’s history.
The airfield site near Colney Street was purchased by Handley Page in 1929 and by June of that year the first assembly hangar was under construction. The Airfield was officially opened by the Duke of Kent in July 1930.
Over the next 40 years hundreds of aircraft were constructed at the airfield, including Heyford, Harrow, Heracles, Hampden, Halifax, Hastings, Hermes, Victor, Herald and Jetstream.
The airfield closed in 1970 with the demise of the Handley Page Company.
To mark the sites' history, The Handley Page Association will hold its 2013 Night of Nostalgia at The Caledon Community Centre in Caledon Road at 8pm on Friday, October 18.
The free event will feature an exhibition ‘A history of Radlett Aerodrome since 1928’ including Handley Page memorabilia, aircraft models, sales brochures, photographs of HP employees, aircraft and production at Radlett.
They association are lso particularly keen to meet ex-employees and their families.
