Firefighters were called to a road in St Albans last night after a car engine caught alight.
A crew were called to Sopwell Lane at about 9.45pm.
The man who had been driving the silver Astra noticed smoke coming from under the bonnet so pulled over.
It quickly developed into a fire and so he called for assistance from the fire service.
The crew remained at the scene for about 20 minutes.
