Recently, Hatfield’s 50 year twinning arrangement with Zierikzee has floundered. Suggestions for a new arrangement have varied with an offer from an obscure Polish town, to Hatfield linking up with several of the other Hatfield’s in the UK and around the world. But whilst Hatfield is spoilt for choice, no town has ever wanted to twin with Welwyn Garden City - not even neighbouring Hatfield! But moves are afoot to align the unloved Garden City with Frinton-On-Sea; a place often derided as a dreary seaside town and a place for retired people. But Professor Jorge Ollia, head of Essex University’s Tourism & Leisure faculty, believes that both towns could corner the market in drearyness. “Together we could capitalize on this aspect” says Prof Ollia, “Whilst every town tries to oversell itself with exaggerated claims of vibrancy and architectural interest, WGC and Frinton-on-Sea could advertise themselves as the most boring towns in Britain. Not everyone wants fun and kiss-me-quick hats” And Doug Graves, secretary of WGC’s Heritage Society, is giving serious consideration to the twinning suggestion. “We only sold 14 WGC postcards last year” he said, “We must try to stimulate as much interest in the town as possible”
