Dear Review,
Hatfield's former cinema was recently demolished and, in its place, 108 student flats are being built. But I have just learnt from a visit to the site that no car parking whatsoever has been included. This is surely against planning regulations? It is my understanding that the council require at least one car parking space per one bedroomed flat. Therefore over 100 should have been provided. I was also told that the developer has promised the Borough Council that they will encourage their student tenants to ride bicycles; which is hardly likely to happen. Why should this developer be allowed to maximise his building plot with maximum flats without providing car parking spaces? This doesn't apply to other developments. The upshot is that dozens more student cars will be parked on already congested residential roads. Furthermore, the Borough Council are about to introduce parking charges in and around the town centre; perhaps they're hoping that students will be a nice little earner for them too.
Yours, Brian Parsons
