Further to a recent article by the Hatfield Review, Welwyn Hatfield Borough Councillors voted last week to approve officer’s recommendations to demolish the historic building and build in its place affordable housing units.
However not all Councillors approved the application, with Labour Councillor for Haldens Ben Yetts saying “The Cat and Fiddle is a part of Hatfield's history, it is actually home to about 190 years of Hatfield's history, and I will not be party to any decision that removes this historic local landmark.”
Speaking to the Hatfield Review following the meeting, Cllr Yetts said “The demolition of the Cat and Fiddle will be a sad day for the local community and I was deeply disappointed to see the lack of support given to it by other Councillors.”
The Welwyn Garden City Councillor added “Hatfield's culture, identity and history has been shamefully neglected for generations by the Council. It’s time this stopped”
