WITH its ancient roots embedded in the Roman settlement Verulamium, St Albans has a rich history spanning two millennia.
Historic buildings pepper the city, from the centuries-old Cathedral to the Grade II-listed Midland Railway signal box built in 1892 at St Albans Station.
And as part of this year's Heritage Open Days celebration, the multitude of interesting venues will be opened to the public from September 10 to 13.
Take a trip up St Albans' beautiful clock tower - the only medieval town belfry in the country, or immerse yourself in the City's Roman past with a special theatre production: Two Roman Citizens Brace Themselves! at Verulamium Museum. The show forms part of the museum's celebration to mark the display of the Sandridge Hoard - a collection of 159 gold coins dating from the 4th Century.
Heritage Open Days aims to champion the range of architecture, culture and history alive in St Albans and across the country to the general public who can learn more about the buildings they see every day.
Last year more than three million visitors took part and this year is set to be even better yet.
Here are just a small selection of venues from the St Albans area taking part.
