Legendary Anglo-Irish comedian Sean Hughes first visited The Old Town Hall’s popular comedy club back in the mid-’90s and he’s back in town next week with his hit show from the Edinburgh Fringe – Penguins.
This is a show full of surprises and hidden twists. Sean takes us back to his Dublin upbringing and the, at times, utter awkwardness of teenage life, weaving in his family, his school days and the business of friendship and tying it all in to the present.
It’s brilliant and multi-layered. Why does society tell us how to behave and react? What does it have to do with penguins? You’ll have to go along to find out.
Sean won the prestigious Perrier Comedy Award for his show A One Night Stand with Sean Hughes in the 1980s, and you’ll have seen him on numerous TV programmes including Sean’s Show, Sean’s Shorts, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, as well as small roles in Casualty, The Last Detective on ITV, Coronation Street (as Eileen Grimshaw’s love interest, the womanising travelling salesman Pat) and in the ITV adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple drama They Do It With Mirrors.
- Sean Hughes’ Penguins is at The Old Town Hall, High Street, Old Town, Hemel Hempstead on Friday, September 26 at 8pm. Details: 01442 228091, oldtownhall.co.uk
