Gosling Tennis Academy star Timea Babos has become a double Grand Slam champion after adding the Wimbledon girl’s doubles crown to her French Open success.
The Hungarian-born 17-year-old and her American partner, Sloane Stephens, came from behind to beat Irina Khromacheva (Russia) and Elina Svitolina (Ukraine) 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 yesterday.
The pair, who knew each other from the tennis circuit but only teamed up via Facebook, are now targeting a third successive Grand Slam crown at the US Open, which starts at the end of next month.
Babos, who trains at the Welwyn Garden City complex, praised the “all-round coaching Gosling has provided for both my physical and mental development which has prepared me for these big occasions, and ultimately enabled me to win these last two prestigious Grand Slams”.
Her head coach, John Morris, said: “we are thrilled Timi has won her second Grand Slam title, especially off the back of her recent French Open win. It is fantastic to see the progress we have made together with Timi and the team since she has been at Gosling, and hope her hard work will continue to pay off so she can achieve similar success at senior level next”.
Gosling, which is one of only four LTA-accredited international high performance tennis centres in the UK, also had more Wimbledon success with Tara Moore reaching the girl’s singles quarter-finals before she lost to fellow Brit Laura Robson.
