A petition to prevent the downsizing of a popular St Albans Italian delicatessen has received more than 300 signatures in one day.
The change.org petition was set up yesterday after it was announced an application was submitted to change the use from shops to residential at 68 Lattimore Road, the home of popular Italian deli Buongiorno Italia.
Owner Alan Oakley has submitted the application to St Albans District Council and also applied for a two storey extension and rear basement extension, which if approved mean the forced downsizing of the deli and coffee bar.
Customers have rallied in support of the shop and have gone so far as to set up a petition, which has 351 signatures.
The petition states: “We face the potential loss of a thriving, local, unique establishment. We also believe that the property 68 Lattimore Road, St Albans can sustain a residential and commercial element as it has done since the late 1800's and we do not see the benefits for it to be changed wholly to residential use.
“We also believe that the loss of retail space will have a detrimental effect on the residential / commercial environment in the local area.”
Signing and commenting, Hannah Jannelli wrote: “My family and I have been coming to this shop for over 15 years as it serves genuine Italian food and has amazing customer service.
“The closing of this shop would be detrimental to the community.”
Phil Ross also commented: “A conversion to residential would be a vote for blandness, and bleak uniformity.
“St Albans has character, charm and individuality that should be cherished and promoted. Cherish your city. Celebrate its uniqueness and character. Save this thriving business that epitomises these rare qualities.”
The delicatessen was last week nominated in the Hertfordshire Food and Drink Awards as independent food retailer of the year.
